Contradictions in the Resurrection of Jesus Accounts

I have recently been in contact with David Austin, in Australia, who has a keen interest in the Resurrection of Jesus and the Gospel accounts thereof. This is his comprehensive offering: We have no "Originals" of any of the NT documents, only copies of copies with many differences.

The Trial of Jesus

Here is a little excerpt from my forthcoming Resurrection book that I am working on, this time concerning the trial of Jesus (and an added quote for those who have already proofed it through): The Synoptics claim that a “great multitude” of people were present for the capture of Jesus:

Some Early Endorsements

As many of you already know, I am writing a sister book to my Nativity one (The Nativity: A Critical Examination [UK]), called (unsurprisingly) The Resurrection: A Critical Examination. David Fitzgerald is kindly writing the foreword again, as he did to my Nativity book. It's going through a

Totally Disingenuous: William Lane Craig Woefully Mischaracterises Me in His Podcast

I have just been made aware of a podcast in which William Lane Craig takes a couple of my short articles to task. The ones in question are: * The Resurrection, Fideism and Circularity * Supernaturalism (and Motivated Reasoning) He absolutely hammers me. Well, he thinks he does. Because what really happens

How the psychology of grief might have affected the origins of the Resurrection story

Here is an excerpt from a brilliant book by anthropologist of religion, Homuyan Sidky - Religion, Supernaturalism and the Paranormal: An Anthropological Critique - concerning the psychology of grief and how it leads to hallucinations. The book is an academic title that commands quite a price. The Psychology of Grief

The Door to the Empty Tomb

Here is a short little section regarding the tomb itself, that Jesus supposedly rose from death from, that I am working on for my book on the Resurrection: Before I go on, I would like to quickly discuss the tomb itself. Or, more pertinently, the stone that supposedly enclosed it.

The Resurrection Belief Supervening on the Holy Trinity Belief

As most of you already know, I am writing a book on the Resurrection of Jesus, looking critically at the historical and theological claims involved. I wrote this aside section to highlight that without a coherent or working understanding of the Holy Trinity, the belief in a (Trinitarian) resurrection is

The Resurrection: What We Do and Don't Have

John Loftus's The Case Against Miracles (UK) is looking like it should be a cracker of a book as an anthology of chapters from different authors presenting a very strong case against the notion of miracles. I am loving his own chapter on the Resurrection ("The Resurrection

Supernaturalism

I posted the other day about motivated reasoning and eric commented as follows: It's possible to 'dispassionately argue' but still be engaging in motivated reasoning. I just don't think that's really the case here. What that would look like is: let'

Motivated Reasoning and the Resurrection

Luke Breuer reminded me of the old canard of motivated reasoning today (on Bert's piece on freethought), and it's a thing that is utterly foundational to beliefs and worldviews. At the end of the day, we are thoroughly psychological creatures. As you may know, I am

My Resurrection Book

I am bloody loving writing my book on the Resurrection of Jesus (The Resurrection: A Critical Analysis of the Easter Story). It's almost writing itself. When you have as many books and sources to draw on, as I have at the moment, there is such a wealth of

Visions of Jesus

I am just researching visions and hallucinations for my present book project The Resurrection: A Critical Analysis of the Easter Story and I thought I'd share my draft introduction to the section: When I previously came to read about visions (as something seen, whether or not it is

The Huge Importance of the Empty Tomb to Christians

We know from Paul's writings and from pretty much every other mainstream Christian that the Resurrection is massively important to anyone professing faith in Christianity. Without belief in the death and rising of Jesus, you get no atonement and no real point to Jesus living, and therefore to

Biblical Exegesis

The Resurrection, Fideism and Circularity

The few times that New Testament claims intersect with history – namely, the Nativity accounts, and to a lesser degree, the Resurrection accounts – the claims fail, historically speaking. What epistemic right does the Christian then have for believing in Jesus, for being a Christian? If you ask the Christian “Why do

"Historical" Bookends to a Historically Vacuous Life

This is an early draft section for one of the first chapters in my new book-in-the-writing, The Resurrection: A Critical Examination of the Easter Story: The birth and death of Jesus are historical bookends to the life of Jesus, obviously, even if the theology continues in Acts and the Epistles

The Resurrection: A Critical Examination of the Easter Story

Here are just some of the non-electronic books I have been perusing to research the book I am not 34,500 words into: The Resurrection: A Critical Examination of the Easter Story. And I have Raymond Brown's epic The Death of the Messiah winging its way to me

Being Skeptical of the Resurrection Accounts; An Online Easter Talk, Tonight

Jesus, Resurrection, Humour and Appropriateness

I posted this on my Facebook page (H/T to Rick Humeny who pasted it on the ATP Facebook page) : I genuinely think this is not only funny but packs a theological punch. I have often before posted on the incoherence of atonement and the ridiculousness of the resurrection account.

The Credibility and Number of Resurrection Witnesses

As I have previously said in my Resurrection series, starting off with looking at the contradictions within the Gospel accounts: The question then becomes, are these contradictions better explained, and are the claims themselves, better explained by an ultimate truth in them, or by an alternative theory? We know from

Easter Round-Up: Everything You Need To Know About The Resurrection (Skeptically Speaking)

Well that came around quickly. It's like I've been a little bit distracted or something! Anyway here is your annual Easter skeptical roundup of previous writings I have done on the Resurrection and other things pertaining to the Easter story. Indeed, I was thinking of turning
