Why doesn't the US census ask about religious identity?

As analysis of the data from the 2020 UK census filters into the public domain, a question arises: Why does the US census not ask questions pertaining to religion? Only about a quarter of Americans know the answer. In the mid-to-late 1950s, the Census Bureau asked a question on religious

Census: Christianity in UK on the back foot

The 2021 national census in England and Wales seems like a long time ago now, but the data is only just being released after aggregation and analysis. As reported recently, non-religion in the UK is in the ascendancy and Christianity is in decline. The latest statistics reaffirm this. Though the

Christians now a minority in England and Wales

Over the past few months, as the UK Office for National Statistics (ONS) has analyzed the data from Census 2021, they have gradually released interesting nuggets to the British public. Today, the ONS released data showing the continued decline of Christianity, the dominant religion in the UK. This census has

Possibiliter Ergo Probabiliter and the McGrew Nativity Debate

Possibiliter ergo probabiliter is a fallacy that Richard Carrier coined to express the ubiquitous technique that theists use to try to explain away issues that pop up in the Bible and this is no more evident in Christian approaches to defending problems within the infancy narratives of Luke and Matthew.

Nativity, Census, Quirinius: Refuting Very Poor Christian Apologetics Again. Even More.

As I explained yesterday (perhaps read it for context), I was linked to a vicar apologist challenge for skeptics to lay out a Nativity contradiction. It went like this: I was linked into some challenge from a vicar apologist who was seeking skeptic challengers to find nativity contradictions that he

Debating Quirinius with a Christian

I had the dubious pleasure of debating a number of different aspects of the Nativity with a Christian apologist (a Cambridge astrophysics graduate and vicar) whom I had been linked to on Facebook after he had posted this: Time for my annual Christmas challenge. Skeptics say that there are contradictions

My Nativity Debate with Lydia McGrew: Post-Match Analysis

I had a debate over whether the Nativity in Luke and Mark was fact or fairytale on Friday night for the Unbelievable? show on Premier Christian radio. I was warned that McGrew might try the Gish-gallup approach so I should get it in myself. I ended up being indeed fairly

Debunking the Nativity: Ancestral Maths

As I have pointed out numerous times, the census as claimed in the Gospel of Luke, is simply incoherent. I have given out a challenge to one of the commenters here. Here is my challenge in the form of statements that the apologist has to address: 1. A client kingdom

The Nativity Census Challenge: Update

For any of you who haven't been reading the threads on the census, a challenge that I set to See Noevo to answer, I would like to update you on what he has delivered by way of riposte: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iIIuR-HjFho For longtime readers

The Nativity Census Challenge: Possibiliter ergo Probabiliter

Let us recap on the Nativity Census Challenge posed to a Christian commenter here. Here is my challenge in the form of statements that he has to address: 1. A client kingdom has never been taxed directly or had such censuses in the history of the Roman Empire. 2. When

Christmas Crackers: Why Return to an Ancestral Town for a Census?

Since this has come up in a recent thread, where Christian commenter and biblical accuracy asserter See Noevo has been defending it, I thought I'd run through some of the many myriad issues with the Lukan census. This excerpt is taken from my book, The Nativity: A Critical

When Your Everyday Catholic Doesn't Get It

See Noevo is no doubt a committed Catholic, but what he said recently really illustrated much of the problem in debating laymen. I don't mean this to be a personal attack on him and to use "laymen" pejoratively, but my point is important. My piece in

Why Marking "No Religion" in the Australian Census DOES Matter

This was a big thing back in the last census in the UK, and it is the same for Australia, who are having a census later this year. Information about this can be found here, at http://censusnoreligion.org.au/. As it states: Many people in Australia are born into

Why return to an ancestral town for a census?

This excerpt is taken from my book, The Nativity: A Critical Examination, and details why Joseph returning to his ancestral town for a census, as according to Luke is a ridiculous idea.

The second-largest religious faith in Canada? Nothing

This is interesting, though the numbers are inaccurate given that the census has become voluntary, and, as such, the completion rate for the census was very low. OTTAWA – A nation of non-believers? The new National Household Survey suggests we could be becoming so.
