Is de-platforming a form of censorship?

On March 30, scholar Dr. Robert Price was interviewed on YouTube and the discussion ended up being pretty controversial for some, not so much for others. What ensued was a small storm in one corner of the internet. Dr. Price was, in one case, de-platformed as a result. Many shouted

Culture Wars as a Cynical Strategy in the Face of a Lack of Economic and Social Policy

I have been arguing elsewhere with a good friend about identity politics and culture wars. I have written before about the culture wars narrative, in which cancel culture features so heavily. This discussion went something like this [excuse typos and grammar as lifted from Facebook and Messenger]: JP: Ok, business

GB News (UK's FOX News) Embroiled in Cancel Culture...

This perhaps comes as no surprise to those cynical ones amongst us. GB News has just started up in the UK and it is a clusterf*ck of FOX News copycat opinion TV, polemically arguing for free speech in a very partisan manner. It has been involved in an...interesting

The Left and Their Cancel Culture!

Goddamned lefties and their cancel culture, as the Boston Globe reports: As the debate over the teaching of critical race theory in the classroom intensifies across the country, the firing of a Tennessee teacher last month emerged as a flashpoint in the discussion over the weekend. Matthew Hawn, who had

Cancel Culture: Some Stimulation for Debate

Cancel culture is coming up in debate in the threads here an awful lot, and I really do think that some people have been sucked in by the perpetual narrative from the right that this is a leftist problem. If we look at the history of the phenomenon, we can

Reflections on Dawkins and the AHA

The AHA have just rescinded an award they gave to Richard Dawkins in 1996. It seems like this episode has created something of a hubbub in the skeptical community - itself a bunch of people loosely associating with each other by hanging around on atheist websites like this. Herding cats,

The Great Awokening: Cancel Culture & JK Rowling

Here is my conversation with David French on Unbelievable on the subject of cancel culture. I stress "conversation" because, although this was a debate, it was actually more like a good ole chat. I don't think anyone won, not least because an hour is not enough

Why Cancel Culture is Largely a Myth for Use in the Culture Wars

In response to the really enjoyable conversation I had the other night in recording an episode of Premier Christian Radio's Unbelievable with Justin Brierley and David French, I felt I needed to express my whole case given that an hour for three people to talk in doesn'

My Debate on Cancel Culture Tonight

I am debating cancel culture with David French, an attorney who was once urged to run for US President. He is an evangelical Christian who sits firmly in the conservative camp but who has no time for Trump. I have so so much I want to say on cancel culture

I Will Be Appearing on Unbelievable with David French

I have been asked by Justin Brierley to appear on Premier Christian Radio's Unbelievable radio show and podcast. I have been advised over the years to appear on it to discuss, say, the nativity or the Kalam Cosmological Argument, but I have never approached them. Anyway, Justin read

"Cancel Culture": Choose Your Narrative

I have been thinking even more on cancel culture and what it means for society. I wrote the extensive piece 'Is "Cancel Culture" Butchering the Centre?' in which I presented some of the topical literature from both sides of the argument. I want to build on

Is "Cancel Culture" Butchering the Centre?

Cancel culture is the talk of the town. What is it, for those uninitiated? The act of canceling, also referred to as cancel culture (a variant on the term "callout culture"), describes a form of boycott in which an individual (usually a celebrity) who has acted or spoken
